Introduction:
This week’s practicum experience focuses on the population of autism. As a medical professor, I believe that this is a very important and relevant topic for medical college students. I have designed this week’s journal to help students reflect on their practicum experience and how it relates to Healthy People 2020 and college course objectives. Through reflective analysis, students will be able to develop a better understanding of the importance of caring, communication, critical thinking, professionalism, and holism in their future medical practice.

Answer:

The population of autism is a unique and diverse group of individuals that require specialized care and attention. During my practicum experience, I had the opportunity to work with children who had autism, and it was an eye-opening experience. Initially, I struggled to understand their behavior and thought it was unusual. However, as I continued to work with them, I learned that their behavior was a result of their sensory sensitivity and difficulty in communicating effectively.

My perceptions changed drastically as I began to understand the unique needs of individuals with autism. I learned that it is essential to be patient, empathetic, and compassionate while working with them. This experience has reinforced the importance of caring and holism in medical practice. As caregivers, we need to recognize the uniqueness of each individual and provide person-centered care.

Furthermore, this experience has highlighted the significance of effective communication in healthcare. Communicating with individuals with autism requires a different approach, and it is essential to use clear and concise language while avoiding metaphors, idioms, and sarcasm.

In conclusion, my week 6 practicum experience with the population of autism has been a valuable learning experience. It has enabled me to understand the importance of caring, communication, and holism in medical practice while highlighting the unique needs of individuals with autism.
